(Undergrad Research) A step towards autonomy

This study aimed to identify among thirty-six learning strategies, the ones used by some EFL students, and highlight the most and least recurrent ones in a frequency scale. The research took place in a language institute in Vitória/ES, with two specifically selected student groups: one from the very beginning of the course, level in which they have very little or almost no knowledge about the language; and the other one from a pre-intermediate level, where they usually use the language. A quantitative approach was used. In order to collect data, a questionnaire with a 5-point Likert Scale was created to register the frequency of usage related to each of the thirty-six learning strategies. A descriptive statistics method, the mode, was used in order to foreground the most recurrent frequency outcomes among the answers. The data analysis showed that the students use all the strategies listed. However, their frequency of usage varied.

(Graduate Certificate Research) Analysis of the learning environment app Duolingo

This study aims to analyse Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Duolingo as a supporting tool to learning English; its instructional design, media resources and forms of interaction available among users. It also lists the activities present, making observations in respect of praxis, as well as measuring its level of acceptance within a group of students. A bibliographical and quantitative descriptive research (GIL, 2002) was developed, and it establishes a relationship between the object of study (Duolingo) and the experience of students while using it. As a means to collecting data, a 25-question survey was designed and conducted, being answered by 109 respondents. The analysis shows that despite the fact Duolingo is a work in progress (beta version), 92% of participants intend to continue using it as an aid in their language learning.

This research, applied to the technological production, had as its main objective the development of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) to offer new possibilities for online interactive education to Centro Municipal de Idiomas (CMI) the English and Spanish language school of Macaé city. It also hopes to be able to propose a break of paradigms of traditional methods in the current educational setting. For the development of the virtual environment and organization of the project, bibliographic and exploratory research were conducted and concepts such as Online Education (Moran, 2003) and (Santos, 2003), Open Education (Santos, 2012) and Distance Education (Moran 2002) were used. The developed environment was named CMI+. It aims to function as an extention of the physical school in the virtual world, being useful as a teaching and learning strategy, aiming to improve the development of multiple skills, whether linguistic or technological, and allow access to a myriad of personal interests in order to foster language teaching and learning.
